Five years ago a gentleman posted a message to Patch-L requesting assistance from all the kind people here in restoring bookmarks to patch collecting sites which were lost when his computer crashed.

This caused me to finally get to work on a project which I had been contemplating for over a a year - a central "starting page" for Scout patch collectors with links to internet based resources useful to novices and seasoned veterans alike.

The result, which was announced on Election Day 2000, is "The Scout Patch Collector's Base Camp" at: http://www.patchcamp.com

This site is a directory of helpful internet resources for pursuing our hobby of collecting and trading Boy Scout memorabilia. We also strive to promote collaboration and teamwork to help preserve the heritage of Scouting, and to build and strengthen fellowship among collectors.

To date the site has served almost 150,000 visitors from over 90 countries, and now averages over a thousand visitors a month.

We owe immense thanks to the collectors who took time to develop the valuable internet collecting resources we enjoy for unselfishly sharing their knowledge with fellow collectors and traders in our hobby.

I look forward to having you visit again soon!

The National Scout Jamboree is just around the corner, and just like in 2001 you'll find special new links to help you keep up with everything going on at Fort AP Hill in Caroline County where 40,000 Scouts from every state of the union and all around the world will gather for a Scouting experience unlike any other.

It's Presidential Election day, and four years ago The Scout Patch Collector's Base Camp was officially launched to the public on the world wide web. Thanks to all who have suppored this site, helping us reach an average of over 2,000 visitors every month!

The Scout Patch Collector's Base Camp is exactly three years old today! According to the LinkCounter there have been 72,085 visits to this site since it's debut - that's over 2,000 visits per month. We're still ranked number one in google searches for Boy Scout Patch Collecting.

A minor site update with 4 new links added, all existing links checked and updated when needed.

Plans for the future include building this site with PHP to track click-throughs and generate real-time statistics about which sites are most often visited via links from the Base Camp.

Updated the FAQ, the Credits, and Webmaster Graphics pages, as well as this news page. Added 3 new sites to the main page and deleted a couple which appear to be gone for good. Changed out the notifier service on this page from the defunct NetMind to the way cool NexLabs Track Engine. Try it!

Reviewed all of the links on the main page. LinkCounter is now a pay service that is so far out of my budget I didn't have to ponder long whether to subscribe/ As a results, all of the links are now direct which will speed connection up, though I won't be able to track which sites are most visited from here any longer.
Friday,
March 8, 2002
The main page is still composed of direct links since LinkCounter is still out of service after their servers were hacked. They claim that they have a backup of the lost data and expect to be online once they can verify their servers are restored and secure.
Wednesday,
March 6, 2002
Received an email from Carl Steinle (thanks Carl !) advising me that all of the links on the main page were nonfunctional since linkcounter.com was not responding. After verifying this and seeing that the problem persisted more than an hour I modified the main page to remove the linkcounter code and substituted direct links to all of the sites.

Greetings Fellow Patch Hounds,

The 2001 National Scout Jamboree is almost here. For those who aren't able to meet at "The Hill" this year I've added a news and weather page to the Scout Patch Collector's Base Camp where you can check out current stories from newspapers across the US and around the world about this tremendous event. Plus, you'll find current weather conditions at Fort AP Hill, Virginia.

Here's a direct link to the 2001 Jamboree News Headlines and Weather page:

http://home.austin.rr.com/elspanko/jambonews.html

Of course, you will also find it linked from The Scout Patch Collector's Base Camp, along with many other links to web sites featuring information related to the Jamboree.

For those who are going, have a great time! For those like me who can't make it this year, hope to see you in 2005!

The newly revised Patch Collector's Base Camp debuts today, featuring many new links to help collectors. I've added a special area devoted specifically to Jamboree collectibles, including new links to these excellent sites:

The Official BSA 2001 Jamboree Site
The US Scouting Service Project Jambo 2001 Link Center
The 2001 JSP List published by Steve and Elisa Delman (authors of the excellent Boy Scout CSP Guide)
Michael Bungo's 2001 JSP's site with information and images of hundreds of JSP's
Rob Kutz' excellent New England JSP's site

For a look at memorabilia from previous National Scout Jamborees, be sure to check out:

Jason's Virtual Jambo Patch Collection and the
Scouter's Attic page devoted to National Jamboree Collectibles

Additionally, I've added links to these excellent collecting sites, several suggested by fellow collectors in feedback:

  • Boy Scout Stuff - A Virtual Boy Scout Museum - a great site devoted to Scout items from 1910-1919
  • The Spoof Pages - Todd Hatfield's site devoted to "spoof," or unofficial/unauthorized patches which have become much more prevalent at recent national events
  • The Boy Scout CSP Guide site which features Steve and Elisa Delman's excellent CSP Reference book
  • The Virtual UK Patch Collection to help broaden the scope of our international coverage.
  • Thanks to all of the webmasters who developed these valuable internet collecting resources for unselfishly sharing their knowledge with fellow collectors and traders in our hobby. Please show your appreciation by sending them an email of thanks or sharing information or images they request so that we can all benefit.
  • I hope you will take a moment to stop by the Scout Patch Collector's Base Camp at http://start.at/patchcamp/ to explore the over 100 links to the most helpful collecting resources on the internet, and don't hesitate to add a link to your own site or one of your favorite sites on the "Free-For-All Links Page."

Greetings Fellow Collectors of the Cloth,

Hope you had a great 4th of July! I've decided to add a special area to the Scout Patch Collector's Base Camp featuring links to web sites which specialize in patches issued for the almost upon us 2001 Jamboree.

If you have a web site (or know of one) which includes JSP's or any other type of patch issued for this Jamboree, please visit the Scout Patch Collector's Base Camp at this URL: http://www.patchcamp.com, then click on "Free-For-All Links" to submit your site. I'll put links to as many as I can on the main page of the Patch Camp site so that collectors will have a central directory of sites devoted to patches for the 2001 Jamboree.

    Greetings fellow traders and collectors,

The Scout Patch Collector's Base Camp (http://start.at/patchcamp/) is a directory of helpful internet resources for pursuing our hobby of collecting and trading Boy Scout memorabilia. We also strive to promote collaboration and teamwork to help preserve the heritage of Scouting, and seek to become a meeting place to build and strengthen fellowship among collectors.

The site was inspired by a message originally posted to Patch-L back in the Fall of 2000 by a collector whose computer had crashed causing him to lose his internet bookmarks. He posted a request for fellow traders and collectors to send him links to their favorite patch collecting/trading sites which reminded me how frustrated I was that there seemed to be no central repository of useful collecting resources, so I decided to make one and invite everyone who wanted to submit links to their trading pages.

Less than six months later the Scout Patch Collector's Base Camp has tallied 3560 visitors (that's around 600 visitors a month) and has logged 4297 clicks to the sites that are linked from the main reference page.

Below you will find a chart which lists the breakdown of the sites linked to and the number of visits they received from Patch Camp click-throughs. It is interesting to note the totals and rankings but I present this as nothing more than numbers with no implied popularity rankings.

My immeasurable thanks to those who granted me permission to link to their sites and to everyone who submitted a link to their site on the "Free-For-All" page. Additionally, I am very grateful to everyone who took the time to provide feedback with suggestions for additional sites for the main page.

I hope you will take time to stop by if you haven't had a chance, and if you know of a page which should be featured at Patch Camp, please let me know! I would love to know of a site that features a list and pictures of all the 2001 JSP's!

Added two new links to the main page: Always There Trading (a source of protective pages for storing and displaying patches) and a list of the Society of Scout Memorabilia Dealers to replace the long defunct page at the ASTA/ISCA web site which listed Scout memorabilia dealers.

The Dealer page at ASTA disappeared when that site was rebuilt and moved to their current URL. I requested that it be returned online since it was one of the most popular linked to sites from here, but was told that there was some controversy about it. I offered to host the information here if ISCA did not want to appear as though they were endorsing specific dealers by making the list available, but received no reply.

This was the best substitute I was able to locate, although I am concerned that it does not include such honorable dealers as John Conley Williams' Heart of Texas Trader. It looks as though I may have to create a dealer listing myself but am postponing that project until I can generate the list dynamically from a database rather than creating a static web page that requires manual editing for every change that is needed.

    Sunday,
    January 28, 2001
On the news of the historic merger between ASTA and NSCS to form the new International Scouting Collectors Association (ISCA) I revised the main page to reflect the new name and archived the first PatchCamp Poll which surveyed opinions on this proposed merger. Put a new PatchCamp Poll online.

I was excited to see that this site comes up first if you go to the Google search engine site and search using the terms "Boy Scout Patch Collectors" - it also comes up first if you do the same search on Yahoo - understandable since their web searches are now powered by Google.

Happy New Year! This site reached over 2000 visitors before the end of 2000, which was a goal I had posted to Patch-L. Not bad for only being online less than two months!

Also, over 100 people have voted in the first "PatchCamp Poll" which asks if ASTA and NSCS should merge.

Thanks to everyone who has visited and supplied feedback on how to make the Scout Patch Collector's Base Camp the premier starting point for our hobby!

Removed all banners and extraneous graphics from the main page to speed loading time and to accomodate those who were put off by the appearance of commercialism on this site. This site is a non-profit enterprise that does not seek to generate revenue in any way, shape, or form. The AuctionWatch and AltaVista search fields were originally added to the main page to provide quick and easy access to those service directly, but some people felt that the banners detracted from the purpose of the site.

Reviewed input and decided upon new links for the main page in the categories of Scouting Museums, Collecting Supplies, and International Collecting.

Submitted the site for consideration for the Lord Baden-Powell Award for Scouting Excellence on the World Wide Web. If you are the webmaster of a Scout-related web site and seek recognition for your hard work, I encourage you to review their site for details on how to qualify and request consideration for this award.

I would like to add a couple of new categories to the main page and would very much appreciate your input on recommended links to include. The first category I would like to add is "Collecting Supplies," and the second is "Scouting Museums." I have also been provided with many excellent links to international Scout collecting sites which I believe would make a good category to fill out the last third of the row to be added.

If you have a web site you would like to recommend for Collecting Supplies or Scouting Museums, please send it to me via the Site Feedback page!

    Thanks!

The Scout Patch Collector's Base Camp web site
<http://start.at/patchcamp/> was first announced to Patch-L on Election
Day (November 7). I'm pleased to see that the site has already attracted
almost one thousand visits, and several collectors, traders, and dealers
have added links to their web pages on the Free-For-All links page.

As I mentioned in the original announcement, the Patch Collector's Base
Camp is designed to be a central "starting page" for Scout patch

    seasoned veterans alike.

We also strive to promote collaboration and teamwork to help preserve the
heritage of Scouting, and seek to become a meeting place to build and
    strengthen fellowship among collectors.

Below are some statistics to give you an idea of some of the links on the
site and to show which have been most popular in the 10 days the site has
    been open to the public.

I hope you will take a moment to visit, and if you have a web site
related to our hobby please add a link so that others may benefit from

This caused me to finally get to work on a project which I had been contemplating for over a a year now - a central "starting page" for Scout patch collectors with links to internet based resources useful to novices and seasoned veterans alike.

"patchcamp.com" now resolves correctly! Based upon feedback from beta testers of the site I have added the navigational links to the top of the pages as well as the bottom. Added link to Craig Murray's page devoted to Eagle rank emblems.

Remade graphic for the "Free-For-All Links" page so it no longer includes the camping merit badge (which is no doubt property of the BSA).

Registered the domain name "patchcamp.com" with Network Solutions. I am waiting for the name to populate through the nameservers on the internet before I begin using that URL. Name service hosting is generously provided by a coworker of mine and former Scout, Jon Gardner.

Received email from Michael F. Bowman, Vice President of the US Scouting Services Project, advising me that he has added a link to this site on the "What's New On The Web" page at The US Scouting Service Project (usscouts.org). I had sent a request for permission to link to the usscouts.org site and invited feedback about this site. I wasn't really planning to open the doors to the public yet, but it looks like the horse is out of the barn so its time to get things in order and end the prototype period.

I received excellent feedback and many helpful suggestions from most of the people I contacted to preview the site.

Prepared and sent email requests to site owners for permission to link to their sites and request their assistance in reviewing the current development version of the site. I also sent requests to preview the site to several prominent people in the patch collecting community.

Created this Site News page, added NetMind service, revised FAQ page to reflect change to Extreme Tracking and deleted reference to TheCounter.Com whose graphic loaded so slow that the page appeared to not work at all. Changed footer directories at the bottom of the main page and FAQ page to include Site News.

Built Site Feedback Form at BraveNet Web Services. Created additional LinkCounter URL's for the Feedback Form. Registered for redirect URL (http://start.at/patchcamp) with V3. Pondering spending 18.00/year to avoid subjecting my site visitors to the popup ad.

Created Free-For-All Links page at BraveNet Web Services, tested with link to my Emblems and History of Kecoughtan Lodge site. Current graphic has Camping Merit Badge in it since I could find nothing else at short notice illustrating a base camp - this will need to be revised.

Built FAQ page with 16 anticipated questions and answers. Removed Auction Rover banner from main page in favor of a banner for AuctionWatch since the latter searches ebay simultaneously (where most Scout collectibles are auctioned), and Auction Rover does not.

Registered all current links with LinkCounter.com for tracking purposes. Created Free-For-All Links page at BraveNet Web Services, using my Emblems and History of Kecoughtan Lodge web site as the first test entry.

After reading a post on Patch-L from a fellow Scout Patch Collector who lost his collecting-related bookmarks to a computer crash, I decided to finally create this site which I have been envisioning for many months.
The Scout Patch Collector's Base Camp
